Albert Speer was a man who did not easily fit into pre-conceived boxes. He was a technocrat, but he also wielded considerable power in the Nazi regime. Whilst he no doubt proved a great addition to the war effort, ultimately he aligned himself with the wrong side. He kept to his designated sphere of work and turned a blind eye to the atrocities he knew were taking place, telling himself that they were none of his concern and that he had no power to stop what was happening. At the trial he showed remorse, but it is impossible to know with absolute certainty how genuine that was, given all his statements and prior actions.
