Chapter Twelve

I hadn’t realized that the atmosphere had grown oppressive until the weight on my chest lifted. I inflated my lungs for the first time since the demon had spoken and shook out my numb fingers. The skin on the back of my hands had mottled like I had put them in the freezer for too long. The tattoo that had once been on my wrist had faded entirely as if it had never been there.

“What the hell was that?” Malik demanded.

“I think that was the demon that killed Sonya and Michael.” Booker pointed out. “It said it had already been called this evening.”

“I didn’t call anything.” I shuddered, wrapping my arms around my chest to try and stay warm.

“You did something.” Tots regarded me with admiration I had never seen on his face before. I got the impression he saved it for special occasions.

“That’s enough fun for tonight.” I brushed my hands down the front of my outfit, wrinkled from a day on my feet. “Let’s call the car and see if it's on its way.”

The guys wordlessly agreed, pulling out their phones.

“I don’t have any service.” Hael’s brow furrowed in confusion. He tilted his head to the side and scratched the column of his tattooed throat. “Weird.”

Tots waved his phone screen at us. “Mine’s out too.”

“Me too.” Booker and Malik said at the same time.

I checked my phone. The WiFi for the building was down, and the service was gone. No 5G. An H at best. I tried to load up the uber app. Nothing. Lyft. Nothing. I cursed under my breath. “I think I need more champagne.” I groaned. Pressing my phone to my forehead.

Booker handed over the bottle, which had significantly less champagne in it already. “Want to explain what that weird incantation was? It wasn’t a Witch language that I’m familiar with.”

“Cyclian,” I murmured, muffling my voice with the lip of my bottle as I took another sip.

The guys turned to me, staring in disbelief and awe. I’d never inspired such a reaction from anyone before. I was familiar with side eyes, with muffled laughter. I didn’t know how to deal with their questioning stares, so I gave The Elementals a shaky smile and focused on taking another gulp of champagne, ignoring the sting of brain freeze behind my eyes as I gasped for breath.

“Cyclian?” Malik cleared his throat. “The demonic language.”

I shrugged.

Tots seemed to be malfunctioning. “You’re literally Rainbow-Brite. You are as intimidating as a baby goat. How would you—” He interrupted himself, shaking his head. “You had me fooled. I thought you were an idiot. A Witch that didn’t use their magic and had bumbled their way onto the staff.” Tots whistled, pacing back to the sectional and slumping against the cushions. “You had me fooled.” He repeated again.

I couldn’t deny that it stung that Tots had painted me with such an unflattering brush since we had met. I felt my cheeks warm with embarrassment.

I opened my mouth to apologize before pressing my lips together tightly.
