1. Create a visual respresentation of your nest egg. Name it, make it beautiful so that you want nothing more than to grow and protect it. Carry it with you when you shop and consider the impact your spending will have on it.

2. Automate your saving! On payday, set up your account (through payroll or your checking account) to automatically transfer money to a savings account that is not easy to access—might be at a brokerage or online bank. Begin with an amount you know won’t throw off your monthly budget, then put a reminder on your calendar to increase this amount every month, even if only by $5 to $10.

3. Read: The Black Rose, by Tananarive Due; Spending, by Molly Gordon; and/ or Money, A Memoir, by Liz Perle. These personal stories are both inspiring and eye-opening.

4. Challenge yourself to save by using cash. For a week, or even better, a month use cash for all your variable expenses like gas, food, eating out, coffee, and clothing. Use an envelope and note on the back where you spend the money.

Remember: Your line of credit, or credit card, or retirement plan should not be used as a savings account. Having money set aside for emergencies enables you to react quickly when the unexpected occurs without adding additional stress to your financial world.
