The first house Joseph wanted to show Dominick ended up being in the same neighborhood as one of Zeb’s old haunts. Russell had checked the location multiple times but had come up empty-handed. Dominick wanted to check it out for himself, so he directed Joseph to the address, hoping to catch Zeb’s scent.

Rundown and clearly abandoned, the house probably wouldn’t provide much information at all. Still, Dominick walked carefully up the wobbly front steps and sniffed the air. Nothing fresh at all. The entire area smelled stale. Dominick knocked on the door, and it popped open. He heard footsteps behind him and turned to find Joseph walking up the sidewalk to the house.

“Anything?”

“No,” Dominick answered. “It’s empty, but I’m going to stick my head in and see if I can catch his scent.”

Joseph came up behind him. “Is that legal?”

“Yeah. The door opened. I’m not going to go through the whole place, though. Gotta have a warrant for that. We can make sure someone knows the place is open.”

“I can help with that. I can find out who the property owner is relatively easily.”

Dominick grinned. “I knew you’d come in handy.”

Joseph rolled his eyes. “I’ll stay on the porch.”

Dominick stepped into the house and took a deep breath in through his nose. Mostly dust, and the house had a mold problem. Dank and damp, it was hard to make out any particular human scent above the rest. It took a bit of concentration, but Dominick was able to pick up a faint trace of a person, although the scent was unusual. With a puzzled frown, Dominick went back outside.

“What’s wrong?” Joseph asked.

“Nothing. I didn’t get much, but a bit of a scent. It’s a start at least.”

Joseph went back to his car and Dominick trailed behind. The neighborhood was one of the older ones in the city, with some rundown bungalows and others that had been renovated. Dominick had always liked that style of house, where everything was just right there and everyone could congregate in one open room. Then again, there was something to be said for the luxury of Joseph’s place—not that Dominick would ever be able to afford it.

The house Joseph wanted to show Dominick was only a few streets over. It surprised Dominick what a difference a few streets could make. The majority of these homes were remodeled, and the landscaping showed neighbors who cared about their property. Still, the neighbors were right there. He could spit and hit the nearest neighbor’s house. Probably not the best idea when you had secrets to keep and a couple of untrained mountain lion cubs in your charge. He tried to keep an open mind, though, as they walked up to the front of the house.

“This place was built in 1920 but was partially remodeled a few years ago. It has two bedrooms and an office. Only one bathroom, but the kitchen was completely redone. Just over nineteen hundred square feet. It’s in foreclosure, so it would be a few months before you could get in here.
