Chapter 17

The band – a fusion of Irish and rock – switched to an upbeat Celtic song with the fiddle taking a lead and the drums sending a pulsing beat through the crowd. In moments, dancers had paired off and the dance floor came alive as people challenged each other to keep up as the beat increased. Niamh laughed, tossing her hair over her shoulder, and sent him a challenging look.

Lifting his chin, Mac met her head on when she dove into a complicated dance step. Linking his arm through hers, he swung her into a spin and then reeled her back in so that her body pressed hotly against his for a moment. Lust shot straight through him, warming his core, and Mac spun her once more wanting the touch of her against him again.

“Sure and you do have rhythm then,” Niamh shouted over the music, when he drew her close. “I thought a big lad like you would stumble all over himself.”

“Don’t tell anyone,” Mac leaned close to whisper in her ear, “but I’ve taken dance lessons before.”

“Have you really?” Niamh’s eyes lit up when his hands came to her waist and he drew her into a complicated series of steps. The drums picked up speed, pulsing through them, and the crowd cheered as the singer wailed into the microphone. “I’m guessing for a girlfriend?”

“Nope.” Mac laughed down at her. “For rugby.”

“Well, now that’s just silly. How can dance and rugby have anything in common?” Niamh shouted. The way her body moved – and felt – under the velvet of her dress was driving Mac mad. He kept his hands at her waist, though he wanted to stroke them up her back, and lower, to cup the soft curve of her bum under his hand.

“It’s a dance, you see?” Mac said, his mouth at her ear. “Rugby isn’t just about the strongest man winning. It’s also about being agile. Anticipating the player’s next move. Working in tandem with your team. Just like…”

“Dancing with your partner,” Niamh said breathlessly, and she almost undid him when she licked her lower lip subconsciously. He stared, wanting nothing more than to lean in and have a taste.

To savor her.

Instead, as the song neared its end, he pushed her out – surprising her with the move – and then pulled her back in before dipping her with a delightful flourish on the song’s last note. Swinging her back up, Niamh’s hair flew around her head and she laughed in delight at Mac. Unbeknownst to them, the crowd had formed a little circle around the two and now everyone clapped for them.

The moment hung suspended between them, Mac’s eyes on Niamh’s, laughter and something so much heavier in the air around them. For a moment, the chattering voices, the music…everything faded away and all he saw was her. This woman – she could be the one for him. See him for who he really was. For the first time ever, Mac wanted to share all of himself with another.
