Chapter Nine

He slept most of the day, and Lily didn’t dare wake him, because in her opinion sleep was the best thing for anyone’s health. She spent a lovely afternoon humming softly to herself while she baked cinnamon scones and soda bread, and put together ingredients for a vegetable stew for dinner. The storm continued to batter the small cottage, and there were a few moments Lily was half-convinced the winds would just pick the cottage up and toss it across the hills.

Now she enjoyed a small glass of whiskey by the fire and had pulled her leather notebook out. There had been no more visits from Fiona and no other way to contact the outside world. Not that there was much need, as there wasn’t much to do but wait out the storm and make sure Callum healed properly. Instead of writing, though, Lily found herself staring into the fire.

He’d seen her.

Callum had really looked at her. He could see her struggles, and hadn’t made her feel worse for them. Instead, he’d championed her decisions and had promised his support. It was…a novel idea, at that. Was this what a true partnership would look like? Lily tried to imagine herself holding court among the Fae, draped on Callum’s arm and covered in jewels, and laughed at herself.

“What’s brought a smile to that lovely face?”

“Oh!” Lily almost dropped her whiskey, but saved it in time. “You startled me. How are you feeling?”

“Much better, thank you. Ravenous, I’ll admit.”

“I don’t doubt it. You slept all day. I’ve made food if you’d like to join me for dinner.”

“I’d love to. Can I help?”

“Um, if you could maybe…find a sheet to wrap around you?” Lily blushed and looked away. Fiona hadn’t been kidding when she said the fae were comfortable with nudity.

“Do you not like my form?”

“No, I mean, yes, of course, it’s very nice,” Lily said. “It’s just…distracting.”

“Ah, you like to look?”

“Of course – I mean, you’re beautiful. But also I don’t think I could eat with you naked at the table.”

“What if I eat naked in that chair?” Callum leaned against the doorframe and pointed to the chair across from her.

“Also would be distracting.”

“I bet you are also beautiful with no clothes. You have a lovely shape,” Callum said.

“Right. Um. Thank you. Now, go. Sheet. In the drawer.” Lily glanced at her cup and took the rest of the whiskey down in one gulp. It screamed its way down her throat, but also forced her to pull her mind away from all of the delicious thoughts now dancing through her brain. Letting out a breath, she stood and turned to go to the kitchen.

“Better?” Callum stood in the doorway once again, this time with a white sheet wrapped low around his hips and a devilish smile on his handsome face. The firelight caught the edges of his face, his eyes alight with mischief, and for a moment he looked every inch a dangerous rogue. The most surprising bit was that for the first time Lily felt herself wanting to walk into danger instead of running from it.
