Kristina

CHAPTER TEN

Big News

Kristina leaned back on the exam table and shut her eyes. The hard surface and stiff plastic pillow shouldn’t have been this comfortable.

Just a few minutes is all I need.

Her nurse, who she’d been relieved to find out was her friend Becky, had collected just several vials of blood before leaving. It wasn’t enough blood loss to explain the intense fatigue that was currently forcing her eyes shut.

Her phone pinged, but she ignored it. It was too much effort to open her eyes and look at the message. Whoever it was could wait. The knock on the door startled her awake, and she looked around with a frown as Becky returned with the Emergency Room doctor.

“Looks like you were sleeping, sorry I have to disturb you,” he said.

“That’s okay,” Kristina said as she sat up. “It’s just been a long day.”

“You could have a mild concussion from the blow to your head. It’s not a good idea to nap.”

“What blow?”

“The nurse informed me you reported being physically struck,” the doctor looked at her with concern, tipping her face up so he could look at it better. “You have some severe bruising. Do you feel safe at home?”

Kristina swallowed back a sob that came out of nowhere and shook her head, ‘no’. He nodded, pursing his lips as he examined her. His fingertips were cool where he touched her face as he turned her head this way and that so he could see her injuries better.

“Just for safety reasons, I’d like to keep you overnight for observation.”

Kristina nodded. The thought of going back home was scary. And she knew that Cassidy’s place would be the first place Davis would look when he figured out she wasn’t where he expected her to be.

“That’s probably a good idea,” she said.

“Good, I’m glad you agree. You probably shouldn’t sleep again for a few hours. We just need to make sure everything is okay and that your head wasn’t hit too hard.”

“That might be hard,” Kristina let out a little giggle. “I honestly can’t keep my eyes open. Is that because of the concussion?”

“No, it’s most likely because you’re pregnant.”

Kristina blinked.

“Could you repeat that? I don’t think I heard you right.”

“Pregnant. When was your last period?”

Kristina hadn’t really thought about it. Well, actually she had, but kept dismissing the signs. Which seemed pretty stupid now. What kind of person ignores not having a period? Maybe in the back of her mind she’d noticed that her period had been missing, but she hadn’t paid attention to what that actually meant.

Oh shit. What about New Year’s Eve? All that booze I drank couldn’t have been good for the baby!

“I think November?” It’s been a while. I guess I’ve been busy,” she sat up and pushed her hair back off her face with a trembling hand.

“It’s the first week of March. You couldn’t have been that busy,” the doctor said.

Actually, between all the work she was constantly doing with the horses, cooking, cleaning, and fighting off
