Chapter 7

She soared through the sky, free from the threats from the Brethren. Up here, nothing could touch her. Alachua’s magic also contained the fire within her. Maybe it wasn’t such a leap to believe he could be her true mate.

They landed in a small oasis within the granite canyon. A natural spring allowed vegetation to grow in what was primarily miles of barren rock. Within moments of their landing, they were once again in their human form. Since magic had transformed them, they materialized as they were before…clothes and all.

Al took her into his arms and kissed her. This wasn’t a kiss shared between friends. Pent up passion caused them both to lose control. She’d denied herself too long. They both tore at each other’s clothing, wanting flesh to touch flesh.

“Is this magic gone wild?” she uttered between gasps as their lips parted to take in air. There had to be a reason for her atypical behavior. In the past, she’d always been a passive lover.

“Magic has nothing to do with it.” Al pulled her jersey over her head and tossed it near the spring fed stream. “I told you nature is all about balance. Souls aren’t formed in isolation, but in pairs. If we’re lucky, we find our other half in corporeal form. That’s when the fun begins.”

She had mere seconds to consider his words before his mouth captured one of her breasts. All thoughts scattered as her body went haywire. An inferno built within her that needed to be released.

Her fingers combed through his hair as she tilted back her head and released a heated breath. Celine staggered on her feet, but Al’s tightening hold maintained her balance. Nothing had ever felt this good. This right.

“I want you inside me,” she said.

An all-consuming need to become one with him had overtaken her. Everything he had shared with her made sense now. Her mother’s magic had made this all possible. She’d bridged time to find her true mate and consummate what had been the universe’s master plan.

Cool air brought her back to reality. Alachua had released her and stood before her. His fingers ran across his blistered lips.

“Oh, my God!” she cried. The heat within her had burned him.

She backed off as he approached. He’d been about to kiss her again when she pushed him aside.

“Are you insane?” Her voice shook as did the rest of her. “I could’ve killed you.”

Al shrugged his shoulders. He didn’t take seriously the threat she represented. If he didn’t have the ability to protect himself, she’d have to do it for him.

“You’re over reacting,” Alachua replied. “All you have to do is control that part of you that produces fire.”

He made it sound so easy. She’d never been able to rein in the power she’d been born with. Every time she failed, there were consequences. The Brethren wanted to end the female line because of creatures like herself.

“Why would I be able to control myself now when I couldn’t in the past?” Her mind pulled up various memories when she had attempted to stop herself, all disastrous.
