Chapter 10

Gin lets out a mighty roar that goes on so loud, I have to cover my ears. He shakes his head, trying to free himself from his muzzle. The Witch of the West flinches, but refuses to cover her ears. She narrows her eyes at me. “Makes no difference how he protests. If he doesn't remove my sister’s shoes from your feet of his own free will, I will kill him and use his corpse to do it. Either way is fine.”

Bile rises up in the back of my throat, threatening to gag me. Tears sting the backs of my eyes as I peer over at Gin. His sad hazel eyes fix on mine. Then I see it, the kiss on his forehead that I'd planted there glows with all the hope I need. “You can't.”

The pale green witch blinks at me. “What did you say?”

“You can't kill him. You can't touch him. And you can't use your necromancy on him. He’s been blessed.” I was bluffing, for sure, since I have no idea what-the-heck I'm talking about, but I'm hoping that my bluff will stick—maybe even be truthful.

She turns her glare at the lion in the stone cage. Her eyes grow wide as she sees the glowing spot on his forehead. “You soiled my lion! You evil, wicked creature. How could you be so cruel. You’ve stolen my sister’s shoes and now you’ve ruined my lion. I have no use for him now. He can starve to death for all I care.”

With her hands fisting on her broom, and her face reddening, she stomps off toward the staircase leading to the fortress, like a child having a tantrum. I blink and watch her go, the flying monkeys overhead swirl around each other, creating a tornado-like vortex. Then they disappear with a pop, but unfortunately, they leave the horrid scent of their decay behind. I gag again and scoot closer to the stone bars of the cage. Using my magic, I try to click my heels together and rip apart the stone or the collar or the chains... anything that might help free Gin. But nothing works. I reach in with my arms to see if I can even touch him and maybe release him manually, but he’s too far away, just out of my reach. Tears flow freely down my face. What am I going to do now? I can't escape and run for it, leaving Gin behind. She’s already threatened to let him starve to death. Joon and Chimmy and Toto are all heading for Quadline, and there’s nothing I can do to save them either.

What is the point in having all of this power? What is the point in having magical shoes, if they can't even help me in this situation. I collapse to sitting on the granite beneath me. Gin does the same and lies with his head on his front paws, those wild, lion eyes peering at me, but his brow is still furrowed with worry as he works the muzzle off.
