Chapter Thirty

GLENN MET ME in the doorway. The look in his eyes pierced me to the floor harder than a nail gun.

“Where the Hell have you been?” he demanded.

I didn’t understand the anger radiating from him like nuclear fallout. I tried to remain calm, at least until I could understand what was going on.

“I was at Jen’s, like I told you.”

Glenn’s glare never lessened, his words spoken between clenched teeth. “I called there. You left over an hour ago.”

I hadn’t told Jen where I was going, knowing she would disapprove. I now realized the mistake on my part.

“I was driving around, thinking.” It was a blatant lie, but he left me no choice. The truth was out of the question.

“With your cell phone turned off?”

“The battery was low,” I replied, the lies coming easier and easier, although I hated myself for them. For the need for them.

Glenn continued to stare me down, as if trying to force the truth out of me through pure will. But that was something I wouldn’t—couldn’t—supply, even as the weight of his accusation tugged at my conscience like a hangman’s noose.

His stare finally began to eat at my nerves until I couldn’t take any more. First the horror of the raccoon dream, and the stress of Celia’s Crossing, then Dan, now this...

“I don’t have to report my every move to you,” I snapped, instantly realizing it was the wrong thing to say. It made me sound both defensive and guilty, which, of course, I was.

Glenn’s face flared red, hands clenched into fists at his sides. “I never said you did. But when you’re not where you say you’re going to be, am I not supposed to worry?”

I couldn’t back down now. I kept my voice firm, although tried to switch to calm and non-confrontational. “I told you where I was.”

“And you weren’t there when I called.”

This wasn’t the first time we’d had fights like this and—as always—it got us nowhere. I did my best to remain calm, but it was becoming more and more difficult. Nothing ever changed between us.

Glenn seemed to realize the same thing. “You know what? It doesn’t matter.” He threw his arms up in the air in angry defeat. “Do whatever the hell you want. I’m going to bed.”

Before I could respond, he turned and stormed up the stairs. The spare bedroom door slammed shut and I knew Gordy would be sharing my room for the night again.

THE NEXT DAY—Saturday—passed in an uneasy silence. A low level of hostility rode just beneath the surface, one that neither Glenn nor I would acknowledge. He was still angry, but the subject wouldn’t be readdressed. His anger would slowly fade, as it always did, and, within a day or so, things would return to normal, which honestly wasn’t that much different anymore. If only I could tell Glenn the truth. But I knew that if I ever told him that I was a witch, he would either laugh and berate me, or call me crazy and pack up and move out.
