Many great leaders have made disastrous decisions when they were too tired or burned out. Your time off—day off, evenings, vacation, time blocked out for focus, etc.—is time that you will get more energy to do what you need to do. Some leaders feel that free time is their enemy. They are driven to continue doing and developing but miss the necessity of resting and receiving energy and getting in touch with their creativity.
Good advice: get a life. Every leader needs to have a “Camp David.”
7. Declare victory and quit. “Command is lonely,” says Powell. And so is the decision to withdraw from the position of authority—a choice he says not every leader makes soon enough. His own retirement from the military was, in his word, “traumatic.”
“One of the saddest figures in all of Christendom,” he says, “is the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, once removed, driving around with a baseball cap pulled over his eyes, making his strategic choice as to whether it’s going to be McDonald’s or Taco Bell.”
“Leadership,” he says, “is not rank, privilege, titles, or money. It’s responsibility.”
Some leaders don't like to listen to good advice.
Knowing when enough is enough, the project is finished, the task is complete, and it’s time to pack, is a sensitivity that all leaders must acquire. Pushing it over the edge doesn’t help anyone or any organization. You have done your job; the mission is complete and God has enabled you to bring the church or organization to another level. As Powell says, “Declare victory and quit.” You have a life beyond the job. It’s another job, project, goal, and dream that you have been thinking about.
A wise man listens to advice (Prov. 12:15; NIV).
