57 BRAVING THE COLD: CAROL SINGERS
The tradition of singing carols hearkens back to the Middle Ages, when Nativity plays were popular. In Slovakia, carolers carried a small homemade Nativity scene from one cottage to the next and from village to village, where the groups would sing for their neighbors. Singers had to brave inclement weather and were probably welcomed into the houses to warm themselves before proceeding to their next stop. The figures in their Nativities were made from carved wood and colored paintings on paper. In their homes, carolers might have a much larger Nativity display, around which the family would gather to sing sacred songs of Christmas. The singing of songs evolved into beautiful music called pastorale that addressed the gifts of nature that the Wise Men also presented to the Christ Child. The tradition of pastorales during the season of Advent continues in Christmas concerts throughout the country of Slovakia.
In the United Kingdom, carolers brave the cold to sing in public in order to raise money for charity. Carol services are held there as well. One of the most famous is held in the chapel of King’s College in Cambridge. It is called the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols and is so popular that it is broadcast on both television and radio.
Down under in Melbourne, people gather on Christmas Eve to sing carols outdoors by candlelight. The Aussies usually have a warm December (summer there), so they don’t have to brave to cold like carolers in northern climates!
