Not surprisingly, it turns out that the ability to meet people and make friends is one of the most important factors in determining how happy we are with our communities. Nearly one in five residents in the Veolia survey of fourteen global cities said that the “possibility of meeting new people” was among the factors they liked the most about their city. Anholt’s City Brand Index counts Sydney, Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona, Melbourne, Rome, Madrid, Vancouver, Las Vegas, Toronto, and Amsterdam as the world’s most open and welcoming cities (Figure 10.3).
