Angels Aren’t Fat Little Babies

Solomon’s temple was ninety feet long, thirty feet wide, and forty-five feet high (1 Kin. 6:2). The cherubim in his temple were so huge that one wing touched one wall, the other wing touched the other angel’s wing, and then that angel’s other wing touched another wall. So, the cherubim had their wings spread and covered the entire holy of holies. If anyone went into the holy of holies except the high priest once a year, God struck that person dead. Even the high priest had to go through a complicated system of making himself pure and making offerings for himself. And if he didn’t do everything properly, God would strike him dead as well.

Josephus, a first-century historian who wrote about the history of the Jews for the Romans, said that the high priest would go into the holy of holies with a rope tied around his ankle that was allowed to drag out into the holy place. That way, if the priest who went in was defiled and God struck him dead, he could be pulled out. Otherwise, whoever went in after him would also be struck dead.

It would definitely sober you up to have to go in with a rope around your foot, knowing that if everything wasn’t just right God would kill you. But who actually killed those who went in defiled? It was the cherubim. Cherubim aren’t little fat babies! In Genesis 3:22-24, God set warrior angels, or cherubim, at the east end of the Garden of Eden with flaming swords to protect the path to the Tree of Life. Cherubim are mighty warrior angels.

But in Hebrews 9:5, the writer said that we can’t talk about these angels now and how they killed people:

And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly.

Because now, the veil of the temple has been rent in two, and you and I can just stroll into the holy of holies anytime we want because of what Jesus has done.

And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent.

Matthew 27:51

This part of the temple no longer applies to us. The veil has been torn in two; the cherubim are gone. If an angel came between you and God when you were about to worship the Lord and said, “Stop! What makes you worthy?” you could rebuke him in the name of Jesus and say, “Through the blood of Jesus I have a right to enter into the very presence of God.” No angel can stop you. That is just awesome!
