Looking back at my teenage self, I know I was being shown how to live beyond limitations and about the importance of seeking knowledge and embracing curiosity. But the choice to do so would be mine. When Uncle Cleve’s eyes became too dim to read, his conversations about life and what was going on in the country and the world continued from a comfortable chair with his ever-present pipe lit up and filling the room with a sweet, pungent odor. From him, I realized that there was more to life than Saturday nights at the juke joints. I had to make time to study, to find out what I needed to know if I was to succeed in life. I had to realize that life was a school from which one never graduates. I have followed his example all my life.
