Chapter Twenty-one

Janiece

Her eyes fluttered when the light behind her lids was too bright to ignore. The smell of K.P.’s favorite cologne danced around her nose, but she still struggled to open her eyes. Finally, as she looked up at the ceiling, everything came back to her, and she wasn’t at Janelle’s in her guest room. She was at K.P.’s, and when she lifted her left hand, she saw the rock that he had slid on her finger the night before. She smiled. It was real, it wasn’t a dream, and she sat up. She turned, and her legs dangled over the side of his bed.

“Good morning, beautiful,” she heard from behind, so she turned in his direction, shocked to see he was fully dressed in a suit without his jacket.

“Good morning. You’re already dressed for work?”

“I am, but I won’t be at the office long. I have a few meetings this morning that I could not reschedule, so I’ll be home early this afternoon,” he said and leaned in to kiss her forehead.

“Okay, I must dress and get to Janelle’s. I have never slept away from my baby, which is why I slept late.”

“It’s still early, just a little after seven. So grab my robe, go have some breakfast first, and there is a toothbrush and fresh towels on the vanity for you.”

“Thanks, baby,” she said, and he exited the room. She went into the bathroom, relieved her bladder, and washed her hands. She washed her hands and face and then brushed her teeth. She decided to take a quick shower, and after she dried her skin, she grabbed the robe from the back of the bathroom door and made sure she secured it because she had nothing on underneath it. She looked in the mirror, and a smile crept on her face. And she said out loud that it was okay to be happy. Then she headed for the kitchen.

“Janiece,” K.J. yelled and ran to hug her. “I didn’t know you were here,” he said, and she hugged him back.

“Hey, li’l man. You were asleep last night when I got here,” she said and kissed the top of his head. K.J. went back to his seat, and she turned to Kayla.

“Hey, Kayla,” she spoke, and Kayla gave her a dry, barely audible, “Hey,” before rolling her eyes. Janiece knew she still hated her, so she was satisfied that she’d even responded.

“Hey, Ms. Phyllis, what’s on the menu? I can help if you need me,” she said, going for her purse. She had to call Janelle because things moved so fast the night before, she hadn’t called her.

“Ask Mr. King K.J.,” she said, pulling things from the fridge. “So far, we have hotcakes, eggs, grits, and turkey sausage, but I know he’ll want French toast before I’m done. That little boy swears that this is Restaurant Phyllis,” she joked.

“Well, I plan to devour anything you make because I am hungry.”

“Worked up an appetite last night, huh?” she said and gave Janiece a wink.
