~CHAPTER 4~

We’re Worried about the Wrong Thing

“Inner peace begins the moment you choose not to allow another person or event to control your emotions.”- Unknown

We can become so engrossed in what other people might say or do that we hide our talents and gifts under a rock for fear that someone will judge or condemn us. Jesus didn’t abandon His heavenly mission just because the majority of people in his hometown rejected Him. (Mark 6:4-5)

Jesus wasn’t concerned about the people who rejected him, he was more concerned about saving those who believed. One way to overcome worrying about what “they” think is to put things into perspective. You have to consider what is your ultimate goal? What has God placed on your heart to accomplish?

For years, I’ve avoided being visible. Mostly, because I didn’t want to subject myself to the opinions of others.

God has called each of us with our specific backgrounds to help those who can relate to our story. There is a group of people out there who need to hear how God has transformed your life and set you free. They need to know that you don’t have to be perfect to come to Christ. You are the example that they need. Your message is the one that will get their attention. Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent.”

If you’re feeling less than or not qualified for what God has placed in your heart, it is quite possible that you are not grounded in the promise of God that He will establish your plans.

“Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” -Proverbs 16:3

We should never discount our potential in God’s hands. Let’s trust God and move on from those who reject us and turn our focus toward sharing our message with those who will receive it and experience the change God has for them.

Moses was ashamed of his past. He didn’t understand why God would choose him to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land.

When Martha asked Jesus why Mary wasn’t helping her serve, Jesus responded, Martha, you worry about the wrong things.” (Luke 10 38:42)

The thing that we should be focused on is not what other people are thinking, saying, doing, but the greater work that has to be done. The harvest is great but the laborers are few and they are probably few, because they are somewhere worried about the wrong things. Let’s not be those people.
