This map shows the outline of the Alamogordo Gunnery and Bombing Range in the early 1940s. Even after establishment in 1933 and almost a decade before the founding of Alamogordo Army Airfield, WSNM is relegated in Army documentation as “White Sand Area” and bisected by the range’s perimeter. B-24 Liberators fly westward over the Tularosa Basin. By far, the B-24 was the most common aircraft located at Alamogordo Army Airfield, with 10 bombardment groups calling the basin home during the early part of the 1940s. The wide open spaces of the New Mexico desert allowed crews to hone their finely crafted skills. (Courtesy of 49th Wing History Office.)
