GARCIA
The bandit, Garcia, rode the high ground. He stayed just inside a tree line of pines. The pace was slow, but he could see for a reasonable distance without being seen. It was nearly noon now, and he had not slept for two days. He had changed horses twice, picking fresh mounts from the vast herds that were allowed to run free. Stopping, he reached back to a saddlebag and removed a small brass telescope. Extending it, he stood in his stirrups. Placing it to his right eye, he checked his back-trail. That damned Mountain Man and the two that rode with him had nearly caught him earlier. In the past, Garcia had escaped capture when he was chased by federales and Apaches, but that leather clad son-of-a-bitch Crow just would not give up.
Behind him, Garcia saw only rolling hills of grass. His pursuers could be hidden by a hill, or they might have given up, but he just did not care anymore. Garcia knew he had to stop before he fell off his horse. Closing the scope, he returned it to the saddlebag. He coaxed his mount deeper into the trees. Garcia dismounted; leaving his horse saddled and tying its reins to a tree limb. Untying a canteen from the saddle horn, he took a long drink of the lukewarm water. Garcia went to his knees in front of the trunk of a large pine. He removed his knife from its sheath and hacked several small branches off the trunk to make a smooth backrest. Replacing the knife in the sheath, he sat on the ground resting his back against the trunk. Pulling his pistol, he placed it on his lap. Within seconds, he was asleep.
The incessant call of a jay woke Garcia. He instinctively grabbed his pistol but found that it was no longer there. His bowels nearly let loose when he saw the boots of a man standing before him. âYou have become careless, Garcia,â said Hector Camacho. Hector and two other bandits stood looking down at the exhausted man.
âI am the only one left. All of the others were killed trying to escape.â
Hector stared silently at Garcia. Reaching down, he offered his hand to Garcia. Clasping Hector's hand, Garcia stood. âHow did you find me?â he asked.
âActually, you found us,â replied Hector. âWe have camped a short distance from here. One of the men was checking our back-trail and spotted you.â
âI am being pursued⦠Iâ¦â
âI have sent a man on your horse to take them off your trail. Come, we must move quickly to not lose our advantage.â
