Chapter 5

“Well, well, well, if it isn’t the ‘Trio of Terror’. Have you all come up with yet another way to send Lamar County into a frenzy of outrage?” Camille’s mom Lucinda teased when Camille, Lydia, and Jaleel walked in, after meeting with the historical society, about six months later.

Lydia’s life had changed so much in the last six months. Her work at the museum continued to keep her busy but at Camille’s encouragement she joined several committees where she could bring to light the lack of accurate African American history in Mississippi and the South in general. It was exhausting work but she loved it.

Lydia’s Aunt Belle still refused to talk about the couple or the barn and even threatened to change her phone number if Lydia brought it up again.

Her cousin Tyrell was still spending more time at the family house than he was in the city and was kicking around the idea of moving out of Atlanta and closer to home according to his texts and online messages. Oddly enough he still wouldn’t speak to her on the phone and the connection she usually had between herself and her family seemed so jumbled she couldn’t get through to even check on him by projection.

For the time being ‘he’ was suspiciously, eerily quiet, she hadn’t had so much as a bad dream in five months but she stayed ready.

She hadn’t seen Mila since the day in Camille’s metaphysical garden, so she knew that she was safe for the time being.

She and Camille had become very close and worked tirelessly on finding out who ‘he’ actually was so they could go after him before he came for Lydia again.

When they weren’t busy with that, then they were working together, teaching each other what they each knew, so they were on the same page. They were so in sync lately that the minute either one of them had a bad moment the other knew and they were having wordless conversations with one glance.

Jaleel and Camille had banded together and were now working together on the complete history on some of the plantation houses he staged, their new updates kept ‘tongues wagging’ just like Camille had predicted.

After his ordeal with his malfunctioning glamour spell and the dark entity following him around that took months to deal with and get rid of, Jaleel decided to learn more about his ancestral magic before he tried to use it again and spent a good amount of his free time at Obsidian Whyspers taking classes, Lydia was surprised to learn how much he actually already knew.

The three of them were also working on the identity of Lydia’s mystery couple and anything else they could learn about them or her family in general.

All in all Lydia was happy and felt her life was going pretty good, except for Jaleel.

Since the morning they had breakfast, she went against her better judgement and met with him for breakfast and lunch on several occasions, even for tea and chocolate at Obsydian Whyspers.
