Chapter 16

Drew’s his eyes had darkened with anger, and his masculine features were harsh with a scowl. Any human would have found him intimidating, but Katrina felt no fear. The pressure of his hand on hers wasn’t heavy, and he wasn’t trying to use any Mer abilities to calm her.

“I can’t let my band down. I have to follow through with the contract.”

“But you don’t have to do your special magic on the recording.”

He hesitated. “The recording company will expect a certain bang for their buck. They’ve seen what we do live.”

“If you’re using your special abilities to win over fans, it’s cheating, Drew.”

A muscle worked in his jaw. She could tell he knew what she was talking about. And the core of the issue for her was the fact that if they became involved, she couldn’t bear the thought of him being unfaithful to her. Using his voice to seduce hundreds of women each night qualified. And if he had enflamed fans throwing themselves at him each night, he’d stray. Even bonding might not be strong enough to curb his need to seduce and possess. It was in his DNA.

But she couldn’t push him away, either. To end things right now would be for the best. But she couldn’t bring herself to do it. She’d been in a state of high anxiety all day, thinking he might not show up for dinner. Her heart had leapt at the sight of him. How would she feel if he walked away right now and they never met again?

How had things gotten so out of control so quickly?

She looked down at the table and brushed her fingertips over her forehead.

Drew cupped her chin and raised her face to his. His expression was serious, his gaze direct. “I haven’t figured it out yet. But I’m trying to make some changes with the band, so we can focus more on the music and less on the women. It started out as a gimmick and now it’s gotten out of control.”

She hoped he was telling her the truth.

Katrina rose to clear the table and Drew did the same. He helped her put the food away while she made quick work of the dishes by way of the dishwasher.

She’d continue to urge Drew to quit using his Siren wiles on the women at the club. She wouldn’t go back to the club to watch him perform until he did.

“I’ll get a sweater. The breeze is always cool off the ocean.” It was odd that living as a human she often felt chilled, but in the water as a Mermaid she rarely felt uncomfortable. She slipped into her bedroom to get the wrap and her small shoulder bag.

“My parents have an indoor pool at their house we could use if you ever want to swim,” Drew said as they left the apartment. “They put it in when I was young so we’d have privacy.

She didn’t know if she was ready for him to see her transform. “I have difficulties in the water, especially in strong currents.
