Whiskey

Sweat was dripping down from his brow as Whiskey helped move building supplies from the shed to the next cabin they were renovating and piling them up. It was backbreaking work, but that was why he liked it. Working with his body and his hands helped him clear his mind of the minutiae and find solutions when dealing with problems. It also helped him battle the urging he was getting from the animal inside him to go to his mate.

It was common for the newly mated to struggle being away from their person. Whiskey figured that was what he was dealing with when it came to his panther.

After setting the stack of boards he was carrying on top of the ones he had already moved, he used the bottom hem of his shirt to wipe his face and took a large drink of water from the bottle he had sitting off to the side. He’d just swallowed when his phone started to ring with the tone he chose for Ray.

Pulling it from his pocket, he answered it and put the phone to his ear. “Ray?”

“Yeah,” she replied, sounding hurt or pissed, or maybe both. He wasn’t sure.

“What’s wrong?” Whiskey instantly turned and headed for the parking lot, where he left his bike.

“Uh… well… I did something stupid.”

Confused, Whiskey kept walking as he asked, “What?”

“I kicked a tire and hurt my foot. I don’t know if it’s broken, but it hurts like hell.”

He stopped at the side of his bike and ran his fingers through his hair, cringing at how sweaty it was. “Why would you kick a tire?”

“Because someone slashed it, and it was flat.”

“What?” he growled, his panther hissing inside of him. “Why didn’t you lead with that? Where are you?”

While she relayed her location, Whiskey turned and started jogging to his house to grab his truck. If she was hurt, he didn’t want to risk not being able to bring her to the hospital. “I’ll be there in five minutes. Lock the doors. Keep your eyes open for anyone too close or watching you.”

“What? Why would someone—”

“Ray, please, just do what I ask.”

“Well, you didn’t ask, but fine,” she grumbled, and he heard her shut the car door.

“Love you.”

“Love you, too.”

He ended the call and shoved his phone in his pocket as he yanked open the driver’s door to his truck.

“Yo! Prez! What’s wrong with Ray?” Torque shouted as he jogged over with Blaze on his heels.

“Someone slashed a tire on the Mustang by Scents and Smiles,” he called back out the open window as he started his truck and peeled out of there.

Because he knew his brothers, Whiskey was positive he wouldn’t be the only one who showed up at that parking lot.
