CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Every time I reach for a memory of Hazel, it feels like I’m chasing a thread to a mess of tangled thoughts. I thought we were friends. I thought she liked being around me.

But maybe I got it all wrong.

I think back to each time we’ve met. She seemed happy—she even said she didn’t hate being in the house when I was with her. But if that were really true, then why would she say those things to her grandma?

It doesn’t make sense.

Unless …

Unless …

My thoughts twist and turn around themselves, trying to understand. Trying to think of a scenario where this could all just be a misunderstanding.

But I can’t shake the memory of Mom trying to push Sunny and her friends to hang out with me, even though they didn’t want to. Was Mrs. Delvaux doing the same thing with me and Hazel?

I sit in bed all night worrying about the things I have so little control over. I wonder why, even though it’s hard to make friends, holding on to them seems even harder.

What’s so wrong with me that I can’t make anyone stay?
