Chapter 7: Shattered glass
“What’s taking him so long?” Jamie asked, twisting around in her seat to try and see if she could spot Dr. Hemingway in the hall. They’d been here for hours already, and Jamie had never been fond of hospitals to begin with.
Her mother was still in her hospital gown in the bed. They’d wheeled her back into the room after she’d come back from the scan, and now they were just waiting for the results.
Everything smelled sharp and fake, like trying to cover the scent of death and sickness with bleach and alcohol. The heel of her foot bounced up and down as she jiggled her leg, restless and eager to have this done with.
More than anything, she wanted this to be over. She wanted her mother’s doctor to come out and tell them that her cancer had gone into remission and that her mother was going to be fine. That she’d live to be a ripe old age and get to see Emma graduate from high school and then college and then get to meet Emma’s children.
She felt like she’d been preparing for her mother’s condition to get worse since she had first learned of it, and Jamie had definitely resigned herself to the fact that she might have to live a good portion of her life without her mother there with her.
But she hoped that it wouldn’t be the case. She’d never been one for praying, but she found herself glancing heavenward anyway and silently asking whoever was listening to make this whole thing be okay.
“You need to calm down, baby,” Adelaide said, gently pressing down on Jamie’s knee to stop the bouncing. “He said the scans would take a while to read. It doesn’t make sense to get worked up about it before we know anything.”
Jamie made a face at her mother, but she could tell from the tightness around her eyes and the way she was holding herself that she was nervous, too.
Of course, she was. This was her mother’s life, and Jamie was pretty sure that her mother didn’t want to die any more than Jamie wanted her to.
“It’ll be fine,” she said, willing her voice not to crack and waver. Her mother needed her to be strong right then, and Jamie could do that. She was used to being strong after all. For Emma, for herself. She was used to pretending that everything was alright.
Unfortunately, her mother had always been able to see right through her.
“Have you talked to Simon yet?” Adelaide asked, and Jamie made a face.
“No. He’s left some messages, but I haven’t listened to them.”
Her mother sighed. “You’re as stubborn as he is, you know that? I feel bad for Emma. Don’t push him away, baby. You’ve got a man who’s made some mistakes, but that’s how these things go. Nobody’s perfect, and at least he cares enough to try and fix things. At least he keeps coming back and chasing after you. That’s how you know he cares.
