The Mali Empire
Musa
The Mali Empire in West Africa lasted from the 1200s to the 1500s. It grew from a small kingdom on the Niger River to a large empire. The area had an abundance of salt and gold mines, and through trading those resources, the kingdom grew very wealthy.
The most famous Mali emperor was named Musa. He came to the throne around 1307. He expanded the kingdom and made it a powerful center of culture and politics. Musa also made the region a center of Islamic culture and thought.
The Mali Empire began to decline in the 1400s. Many cities were attacked by neighboring people. Also, citizens of some cities rebelled against their own rulers. By 1550, the empire had lost most of its power. Although the kingdom eventually fell, the name âMaliâ is still used by the modern country of Mali.
