Outdoor Worship

Today, people enter the inside of churches and synagogues and mosques to worship and pray. This was not the case in ancient Greece. Although there were priests and priestesses at the temples, no services were held inside. The temple was considered the home of a god or goddess. So people stood outside and offered their prayers. Sacrifices of animals—often cows—were also offered to the gods on an altar outside the temple. Every temple was devoted to one particular god: to Zeus, to Poseidon, or—as in the case of the Parthenon—to Athena.
