CHAPTER 5
Dangerous Visitors
To Jacob Roggeveen and the Dutch sailors who first reached Easter Island, the islanders seemed so strange. They were mostly naked, with tattoos all over their bodies. Many of them had objects in their earlobes. Their earlobes hung down almost to their shoulders. They spoke a language that the Dutch couldn’t understand. The Dutch were a little bit afraid of them.
But as it turned out, the native people were friendly and trusting. It was the Dutch who did harm to the islanders, not the other way around.
On that first day, the islander had come to meet their ship. But the Dutch were still afraid to go ashore. So the next day, more islanders swam out to meet them. They came in rafts or paddled small canoes. They didn’t wait to be invited. They scrambled aboard the Dutch ships, bringing presents—roasted chickens and bananas.
