Chapter Fifteen

The next morning, she thought she felt Brett’s eyes on her but when she looked up, Brett was focused on the sports section of the paper. Absently, Emily turned the pages of the Lifestyle section. When she came to the obits, a painful jolt shot through her—Mark Jepson stared out of the page at her. She read with disbelief the few lines of print about his life. He was only forty and he was dead.

She cleared her throat. “Brett, Mark died. Look.” She turned the paper so that Brett could see the obit.

Brett leaned across the table to read. It only took a few seconds to scan the article. “It doesn’t say how he died,” she said.

“I didn’t realize he was that sick.” But she remembered the odd reddish splotches, not like a rash, but sort of like birthmarks. He’d had none when he was working with her. She recalled how he’d gone off with friends on their marketing trips. Only she’d never seen the friends. Brett had brought this up before, what might have happened, and here it was staring her in the face.

Brett said it first. “We thought he had AIDS. Poor guy. Didn’t you say he went home to his parents?”

“Yes,” She looked like she felt, horrified, and raised her eyes to Brett’s. “I hope they loved him.” She was trying hard not to cry.

“Those reddish-brown spots you said looked like birthmarks were bleeds under his skin,” Brett said.

“How do you know so much about it?” She watched Brett with troubled eyes.

“I’ve read about it. So have you. It’s a death sentence. They’re calling AIDS the gay disease.”

“How do you get it?” Could it happen to them?

“Through the exchange of bodily fluids. Lesbians are the least likely group to get it.”

Emily was ashamed of being so concerned about herself.
