“WE saw you and Dolan,” Bes says, staring down at me from above. “Could’ve picked you up earlier, but we thought it would be fun to watch you sneak around. And it was. Until you started climbing the scaffolding. What were you thinking? I could have been seen dragging you off there.”

“Maybe you shouldn’t have done it, then?”

“Eh, it bites!” Wilf guffaws.

I look from one to the other. “The Ravens told me you have Edie.”

“You went to see the Ravens?” Kit says.

“Huh. Gutsy.” Bes’s eyebrows lift in surprise.

I’m secretly thrilled by this, but then I remember why I’m here. “I don’t understand why you’re holding her. Why would you do that?”

“Who says we’re keeping her against her will?” Bes replies. “Is that what the Ravens told you? That we kidnapped her?”

I go to say yes, but then I realise Coletun Brennus didn’t exactly say that. He said that Edie was in a tower, and that Kit, Wilf and Bes were with her. That’s all.

Well, same thing.

“I’m disappointed you’d think that of us. Aren’t we the perfect golden children who can do no wrong? The heroes of this fine tale?” Bes makes a grand sweep of her arms.

“That’s why I can’t believe you’ve done it.”

“Even if we had kidnapped our precious author, which we haven’t, we’re faeries, not angels. We’re not as perfect as you’d like us to be.” Kit goes over to rest against the wooden table in the room. He crosses his trademark high leather boots, his trusty knife peeking out of the top of the right one. Wilf and Bes follow him, leaving me by the door, on my own.

Once again I feel like the unwelcome outsider. Well, I don’t care any more. How can they honestly claim they haven’t kidnapped Edie? She’s locked in a tower one floor above them. How stupid do they think I am?

“That’s it then, is it? That’s the end of the Bells series. You’re just going to lock your creator up, lie about doing it, and leave it at that. Leave everyone hanging. That’s how you want to be remembered? A nothing ending in book nine of a ten-book series?”

They remain silent.

How can I get through to them? “Um, hello! You’re supposed to be getting ready for the final battle! Everyone’s waiting!”

Bes stares me down. Kit crosses his arms. Wilf sticks a finger in his ear and starts digging around.

I look at the three of them in disbelief. What is going on? They’ve fought so hard and for so long against Ravenkind, and now this, when they’re so close to everything being over?

“I . . .” I honestly don’t know what to say to them.

“What?” all three of them bark.

I take a deep breath. “I thought the Ravens had taken Edie. I thought they’d taken her because they were afraid they’d lose the final battle. But they’ve known they’ll lose all along. They told me so. They get what’s going to happen. It’s only you three who don’t seem to understand.”

Kit pushes himself up off the table.
