AS THE New Orleans made her way south, the going got easier and the evidence of the earthquakes became less apparent. On December 30, the steamboat reached Natchez, where she received a tumultuous reception; the celebration included the first steamboat wedding in history, as Nicholas Baker, the boat’s engineer, married Lydia Roosevelt’s maid.

Finally, on January 10, 1812, more than two and a half months after leaving Pittsburgh, the New Orleans steamed into the harbor of her eponymous city with Nicholas Roosevelt resplendently decked out in his ceremonial garb. Roosevelt had clearly and emphatically proved to the world that those who had doubted the feasibility of steamboat travel on the Mississippi were wrong. Indeed, the New Orleans had not merely succeeded in conquering the Mississippi, she had also survived one of the most hazardous events in the history of the river. Soon, many more behemoth steamships would follow her. The west would never be the same.
