Tip #4: Prompt a Yes-or-No Response

In another effort not to get dial-toned, your script (if you choose to use one) needs to allow for a pause so the person can tell you upfront if he’s not interested. The last thing you want to do is give your name, babble on incessantly like a telemarketer, and not give the recipient a word in edgewise. The prospect may get ticked off and hang up (which really sucks if she remembers your name!).

Instead, have an opening statement such as, “Hi, Joe. My name is Kristen Fischer, and your colleague Tom Smith referred me to you. Do you have a moment to speak?”

This lets the person respond so you know if you should go on or let him continue with his day.

How can I get over my cold-call-a-phobia?

“Cold-calling can be a little scary at first but once you realize it’s just a voice on another line of the phone it’s not that bad. Honestly, more than half of the calls will be messages on their voice mail anyway so just have a set script and just keep calling…you’ll be done with those number of calls in no time. When connecting with people I realize that it’s all about being in the right place at the right time, so don’t be afraid to make those calls.”
