Chapter 14

The smell of coffee percolating roused Grace. Blearily she sat up and looked in the kitchen. Jet looked like a preppy in a pair of khakis and light-blue shirt. He was standing at the sink stacking dishes in the dishwasher. Grace’s eyes focused at the clock on the wall. Blinking her eyes, she thought, Eleven o’clock!

When Jet saw that she was awake, he scrutinized her face and said, “I started to wake you up last night so you could go to your room, but I didn’t want to disturb you. You never used to be such a late sleeper. What happened?”

“Nothing,” she answered, swinging her legs to the floor. “I can do that,” she said, pointing at the dishes.

“I got it,” he replied.

“I should have remembered to get paper plates from Kentucky Fried Chicken.”

“I’m glad you didn’t. They’re not good for the environment. If everyone used real plates, it would go a long way toward helping the planet go green.”

Grace looked at him. “I don’t remember you being so environmentally conscious when we were growing up.”

“You don’t really think about it when you live in a place like Lake City because of its fresh air, but once I started traveling and saw cities with skylines full of smog, I realized how real a problem it is.”

Grace looked at Jet and said in a somewhat awed tone, “Jet, you’ve always had a good heart. But now you’re older, the way you care about things,” she placed her hand on her heart, “and what you do for others, it’s amazing.”

Jet hid his expression from Grace as he started the dishwasher. Straightening, he opened his mouth just as the doorbell rang. “I guess that’s my clue to leave. I’m sure that’s your hairdresser.”

“Gee whiz, I totally forgot about that.” Grace stood and caught Jet staring at her with a strange look on his face. She glanced down at her body. She’d slept in a pair of his boxers and one of his T-shirts and she knew she looked like she needed a makeover. “Will you let her in while I brush my teeth and put a bra on?”

“Sure,” Jet answered without revealing what he was thinking. He walked towards the door.

Grace was in the bedroom shrugging into her bra when she heard a clanging sound from outside. “Do you mind helping me lift this chair up the steps?”

“Not at all,” Jet answered smoothly.

A few minutes later, Grace heard, “You’re so strong, Jet.”

In the bedroom, Grace took her finger and acted as if she were sticking it down her throat to vomit. Then she hurried out to the den.

When she reentered the den, she was shocked to see a child that appeared to be around three or four years old in the woman’s arms. No, she didn’t bring her child with her. That’s so unprofessional. After how I’ve been run through the mill lately, I certainly don’t feel like being bothered with other people’s younguns. Well, to be fair, she did come to me and save me from being stared at in one of the local beauty parlors.
