AS THE DAY wore on, Ken felt as if he were merely spinning his wheels. He was no closer to solving Vi Mullen’s murder than he was finding out the truth about his girlfriend, Shar. He was depending on a teenager who couldn’t grow facial hair yet.

Shaking his head, he cursed his luck at getting this murder—not even to mention the remains that had been found under the floorboards. Both cases had him in Buckhorn for who knew how long. Living in a town more than an hour away made it impossible to spy on his own girlfriend who was living in his house while he was in a ratty motel.

Both he and Jaxson were putting in long hours, needing to talk to suspects before too much time passed since the murder. Maybe it would be smarter to go home and drive the hour plus each morning and night. But he knew it was cheaper and more efficient to stay at the motel at least until they’d interviewed the main suspects on their lists.

He knew that his sour mood was due to the fact that he suspected Shar had been cheating on him for some time. He hadn’t broached the subject with her and admittedly based his suspicion on a look he’d seen pass between Shar and some attorney ambulance chaser at a recent party. But he knew that look, damn it.

Just as he was anxious to talk to Lynette Crest strictly based on a look he’d caught at the café the morning Vi’s body had been discovered. He wondered if he were any more right about what he’d seen then than he was with Shar and the lawyer as he knocked on Lynette’s door.

She was a tall thin woman in her midsixties or seventies. There was a primness about her, a rigidity, as she opened the door dressed in a crisp and freshly ironed blouse and slacks. He could smell the ironing spray she’d used and see the ironing board through the crack in the partially open door to the laundry room. Past her, the house like Lynette was immaculately clean and uncluttered. He wouldn’t have been surprised to find the couch covered in plastic.

“I’m Acting Marshal Kenneth Yarrow,” he said, showing his badge. “I’d like to ask you a few questions.”

“If this is about Vi Mullen’s murder—”

“It should only take a few minutes,” he said, cutting her off.

Lynette seemed to hesitate before she stepped aside, saying, “I only have a few minutes. I’m watching my grandchildren this afternoon.”

He wiped his feet and stepped in as far as the rubber mat where Lynette had apparently taken off her shoes when she’d come home. She now wore flats, which he suspected were inside shoes. The house didn’t feel in the least bit welcoming. He couldn’t imagine grandchildren playing here.

“How old are your grandchildren?”

“Four and six. A boy and a girl.” She didn’t offer him a chair or encourage him to come any farther into the house.

Pulling out his notebook and pen, he decided to make this quick.
