CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“Are you sure you’ll be safe going out alone?” Sevek said for what seemed like the thousandth time as Emma finished buttoning up her coat.

Emma smiled reassuringly and dug out her wallet from her coat pocket. She pulled her driver’s license from it and presented it to him. “As long as I have this, everything should be fine if I’m stopped along the way.”

“I can’t believe it’s as simple as that,” he countered stubbornly.

“It is and it will be as long as I don’t give them a reason to be suspicious of me,” she explained patiently. Again. “Having a man without any ID whose eyes also happen to be a shade that I’ve never seen on another human being would definitely give them that reason.”

“But—”

“No buts! I’m just going to my parents’ house. You can’t keep wearing my bathrobe, especially if you’re eventually going to travel within the city. You’re just lucky that my dad’s built like a linebacker. Buying men’s clothes will raise all the red flags if I ever fall under suspicion by the authorities.”

“What’s a linebacker?”

Dammit but didn’t he look sexy when he looked so blatantly confused…

“I’ll show you later. I’ll only be gone an hour, tops. Promise. My parents don’t live that far from me.”

“Fine,” Sevek growled reluctantly. “I’ll stay put for the moment.”

“You’d better,” Emma said sternly. “I don’t want to come home to an empty house only to see you being shot on the six o’clock news. Remember, getting you some human clothes is only the first step.”

Although the drive to her parents’ house was blessedly uneventful, Emma still couldn’t shake the feeling of dread that had taken hold of her the moment she had backed her car out of the garage. A habitual worrywart, the feeling was nothing new, thus she did her best to ignore it as the usual paranoia.

It didn’t help that she had passed what amounted to a whole platoon of soldiers patrolling along all the neighborhood sidewalks and along the curbs of the main roads, ARs in hand.

At least the roads weren’t too icy, she thought as she unlocked her parents’ front door and slipped inside. The city probably had the army to thank for that. Clearing the roads of all that snow and salting them had probably been a top priority once the blizzard had run its course.

Emma raided her father’s closet first thing. She chucked various types of shirts onto the bed along with a pair of jeans and several pairs of sweats. It was a toss-up whether or not the jeans would fit, but she felt Sevek should have something at least a little bit more formal than sweats if at all possible should he make an appearance in public. As for underwear, he would just have to go commando. The thought of Sevek wearing her dad’s boxers made her a bit queasy. Underwear was at the top of her list of things no one should ever share.

She was just stuffing all the clothes into
