CHAPTER FIFTEEN

STAN BEAUMONT

I detested dealing with self-important lackeys. I went through this every time I made travel arrangements for the quarterly meeting. They created a show of power—those with little took this opportunity to make others jump through hoops.

Feeling frustrated, I searched for Adira. I used the blood connection to locate her. I only had to conjure the memory of how beautiful she looked as I fucked her. Her long hair spread over my linens, and her eyes at half-mast with pleasure.

My belly buzzed with anticipation to touch her again. To make the beauty beg for my touch. Through the magic of our blood bond, it was as if my spirit led me to her in the basement gym.

Once there, we could work out, relieving some of my ill feelings. Later, we’d enjoy more intimate interactions in my room.

As I entered the gym, the scent of blood filled my nostrils. There was also anticipation and something close to hate. I rushed into the large space where we sparred.

In the circle stood the male guard, Jacques, and Adira. She was on her back, bleeding profusely.

“What is happening?” My voice thundered. There were rules. Those in Sebastian’s employ were not to injure another employee to the point of weakness. This was way over the line.

Those watching froze as if that would make them invisible.

I walked into the fighting circle. “Both of you. Clean up and meet me in my office,” I ordered.

Adira slowly got to her feet. She didn’t look in my direction.

Jacques watched her leave. “She shouldn’t be here. She’s not good enough.”

I had my hand around his throat with his shoulders pinned to the mat before he sensed my movement. “Be very careful with your next words. You are not the Fifth.”

His claws dug into my wrist and forearms.

“Stop fighting me.” I shook him. “Five minutes. My office.”

Dear Lady, they were like children. The guards needed supervision, or they tended to get aggressive with one another. However, I expected more restraint from them.

I made my way down the hall to my office. I didn’t spend much time in the room. I wouldn’t say I liked being closed in down here. I worked best when I could move around. If I needed to know something, I found the party and asked.

I sat behind my desk and waited.

Jacques arrived first.

My glare followed him to one of the chairs in front of my desk. “Not a word.”

His lips tightened as he inhaled loudly.

Four minutes later, Adira arrived. Her wet hair was pulled back in a ponytail. Her golden complexion showed hints of pink. Enough damage had been done to her that she’d needed to feed before coming to my office.

I didn’t have to tell her to sit. Leaning back in my chair, I stared at the two guards.

Adira did not meet my gaze. She stared over my right shoulder.

Jacques spoke first. “It is imperative that we know our skill levels and that of the others we work with.”

He was going to try to spin this to make it look like he’d done this for the good of us all.
