Chapter Nine

When we walked into the library, I moved toward the bookshelf, dragging my fingers against the leathery spines of the books, fighting against reining in my wicked thoughts. Killian silently followed, settling in near the fireplace, and his scent carried to me, tempting me to turn around and finish what we started. Goddess, his kiss still lingered on my lips. I brushed my fingers there, feeling the tingling of his touch.

A low groan broke the silence. “It would be wise to stop thinking about whatever you’re thinking about before your father gets here,” Killian murmured.

I glanced over my shoulder. “Maybe next time don’t kiss me like that, and we won’t be in this situation.”

His nostrils flared, his eyes glowing. “That is a promise I will break.”

My stomach somersaulted under the assault of this raging passion, when I heard voices coming down the hallway. Killian chuckled as I turned back to the books and began thinking about cleaning a dirty toilet.

“Good, you’re both here,” Ari announced, entering the library, looking handsome and prominent, wearing a suit with a black tie.

He didn’t seem to notice the desire hanging thickly in the air or didn’t react to it if he did. “News from the Assembly?” I asked, moving closer, near the fireplace.

“Indeed,” said Ari. “We have an audience with them.”

Nerves raced up my spine, but I swallowed, shoving them away. To visit the Assembly meant to go before the five most powerful witches in the United States, the very witches who banished me. How would they react to my being part vampire? While I was desperate to get answers from my aunt, I was about to walk into a place where I’d be stripped of defenses and exposed to their judgment.

“I assume you want to come along,” Ari said to Killian.

He nodded. “Yes, Sire.”

Ari paused to examine me, and then he said softly, “Your aunt will answer for her deceit. However, I am aware that facing her now, knowing the truth and revealing this truth to the high priestesses who banished you may be difficult for you.”

Part of me wanted to stay back, to not face the truth that my aunt had lied to me my entire life and had stolen my heritage from me. But Killian’s words to me yesterday still echoed in my mind, and the other part of myself—the stronger part—wanted to face them, show them that they could never break me.

Killian’s fingers slid into mine, and I looked up into his eyes. “Together,” he said, giving a curt nod. “We will face them together.”

“Not only face them, Willa,” Ari added. “We will show them exactly where you always belonged.”

Everything suddenly seemed so simple … and good. For so long I struggled to find the place I fit in, but now I knew why, here was where I belonged. With my father, and my mother had she been here too. I didn’t belong in the Assembly’s world where someone like me wasn’t accepted. I belonged in this new world my parents had forged.
