CHAPTER TWELVE

Airon watched the newly mated couple standing in front of what Emma had called a three-tiered wedding cake with more attention than the scene seemed to warrant. Half because of his own curiosity and half because of the scent of amusement and anticipation coming off Lillian in droves that served to only fuel his curiosity. He was torn between wanting to watch his new Terran lover and wanting to finally see what all the fuss was about regarding this Terran cake ritual.

The fact that she now carried his scent was also a major distraction.

Hearing Lillian’s reasons for her initial standoffish behavior towards his advances made that intermingling of their scents even more poignant. He wasn’t sure if he had Emma or just plain fate to thank for Lillian’s softening stance towards him today, but he would thank Sevek’s mate all the same the first chance he got.

Emma was now cutting the cake into small triangles. He frowned. So far, nothing either of them were doing seemed out of the ordinary. A sudden squeeze to his hand had him instantly turning to look at Lillian.

“I think you’re making this out to be way more spectacular in your mind than it actually is. Don’t. You’ll just be disappointed otherwise,” Lillian chided. “Like the wine prank, this is just one of dozens of human wedding traditions.”

Airon shrugged and turned back to Sevek and Emma. “We’ll see.”

The couple picked up a slice of the cake using their bare hands. Airon raised an eyebrow when both appeared to be about to feed their piece to each other. Then a split-second before each piece reached their mouths, both Emma and Sevek smashed their pieces of cake into each other’s face and twisted their hands to smear it in good.

Airon barked a surprised laugh. “I wasn’t expecting that at all.”

Lillian grinned. “Less mess than being dunked into a vat of wine, but still just as funny.” She glanced over at her parents who were standing a few people down to their right. “I just hope Dad got a good video of it. One day I’d like to make pictures of a few stills when we don’t have to hide their marriage anymore.”

He could hear both the sadness and the anger in her tone. That couldn’t stand.

“King Dagon will find a way to make it happen,” Airon said firmly. “I’ll do my part as well. After all, Truthseekers can also spread truths, themselves.”

“Carefully, I hope,” Lillian said. “Nothing good will come of you blowing your cover on our behalf.”

“Carefully, I promise,” he assured her, bending down to kiss her tenderly on the forehead.

A clearing of a throat had him looking up and Lillian flinching. His nose told him it was Lillian’s mother before he found himself being seared within the older woman’s disapproving eyes.

Then Lillian laughed and the stern look on her mother’s face changed to confusion. “For a minute there, I forgot that I was a grown woman of almost thirty under that glare.”

“A grown woman still shouldn’t lie to her mother,” Shannon admonished.
