Chapter 14

“If I were murdered, and someone contacted me on the other side, I would tell,” Abby said bluntly.

That startled a laugh out of Leon. They’d reached the café. He stepped forward to open the door. “Maybe, but then you’re a special case.”

She shrugged at that, as she walked inside. “I’ve just seen too much injustice in the world,” she murmured. “I would like very much to see somebody pay the price.”

“But do they ever really?” he asked.

“I’m not getting into a discussion on justice and the merits of our penal system.”

“No, we need to focus on Stefan.”

“We really don’t.” She winced, then spied a table in the back.

“I’ll grab two coffees.” By the time he reached her again, he picked up the conversation without missing a beat. “Why don’t you want to work with him?”

Reaching for her coffee, she quickly took a sip. “It’s not that easy.”

“He told me that you have certain abilities.”

Abby snorted. “I think he says that about everybody.”

“Really?” He was obviously surprised at her answer.

She nodded. “Yes, it seemed like, every time I met him, he was telling me that.”

“Well, he didn’t say anything to me about having abilities.”

“No, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he does the next time though.”

“And do people really have abilities, or is it just him?”

“I would say he’s special,” she stated succinctly.

“Is that the only time you’ve ever worked with him?”

“There were a couple cases.” She shrugged. “And, yes, he was very instrumental in bringing the cases to a successful close, but he was very unsettling to work with.”

“Ah.” Leon nodded. “I can see that. I remember being quite shocked at just how much he knew.”

“Yes, and that’s just a minor part of it too.” She shook her head. “He knows stuff that you never expected to think about anyone else knowing,” she murmured. “And to know that somebody else could look at you and see that stuff, it’s very unnerving.”

“But he can help?”

“What do you want me to say?” she asked. “If your aunt is truly dead—and I’m very sorry to hear that—but, if it’s true, what is it that we’re trying to do here? If I don’t have a location of the body, with no idea who killed her, I don’t really have very much to go on.”

Leon slouched into his chair and nodded. “And I get that, but Stefan also seemed to think that you could stop a particular killer.”

“Yeah, he was adamant about this four years ago and then again two years ago,” she noted, “but that doesn’t mean this has anything to do with me.”

“This?” Leon immediately jumped on her wording. “You said ‘this,’ like you knew what he meant. Do you think whatever’s going on is related?”

“I have no idea.” She glared at him. “You just spoke to Stefan yourself. Why don’t you ask him more questions?”

“I would, but basically he told me to talk to you.”

“Of course he did.” She rolled her eyes. “He has his ways of sending me people who he wants me to speak with, to convince me that I should be doing more.
