The Pain Has a Purpose

That’s when I understood why God allowed this land issue to happen. Romans 8:17 says, “Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.” It was a small way to identify and align our hearts with Jesus. And really in the big scheme of things, this was such a little way to suffer. Even if the court ruling had gone the other way, it would have still been such a small way to suffer.

A friend of mine later gave me added perspective. I was telling her about the day the sheriff came to the door and how horrible it was. On and on I went until she asked a simple question: “Lysa, do you know what happened in my life the last time a sheriff knocked on my door?” I didn’t know what to say. Her response eliminated my pathetic pity-party: “He was coming to tell me my dad had committed suicide. Do you know how many people are out there today who had a visit from a sheriff? I can almost guarantee you that most of them would trade your visit with theirs in a heartbeat.”

How humbling. How true. Yes, we will suffer in this life. Something may be causing you to suffer right now, but the pain has a purpose, and you aren’t alone. Jesus is right there with you to comfort you in a way only He can, for He knows what real suffering is like.

We can’t even begin to imagine the way Jesus suffered for us. Even our worst sufferings cannot compare to taking the sin of the world upon His body, being nailed to a cross, and dying for people who were beating, spitting on, mocking, and killing Him. Nor can we compare our suffering to God giving His only Son for all this to happen as He, His Father, had to turn and forsake His Son. Yet He did all this so that we can share in His glory. We only have to suffer in comparatively small ways, but we will share in His glory in the grandest of ways.
