Jess needed a drink. He’d just returned from carrying Paige home, literally, and now he was trying to convince himself he had done the right thing by waiting. Even now, he was tempted to walk back down the path, knock on her door and tell her he’d changed his mind. However, what held him back was knowing his actions tonight were part of his strategic planning.

She might not think one night would make all the difference in the world, but it did. He needed to show her that she meant more to him than being a one-night stand. Hell, she was more than a casual fling, but she’d have to realize that for herself. Of course, with a little help from him.

Like before, whenever she came and left, her scent lingered. At her door he’d told her to get a good night’s sleep. Now chances were, he wouldn’t. He glanced at their wineglasses that had been left on the coffee table. The wine bottle was half-full. Instead of drinking and talking, they’d been kissing. He wouldn’t complain about that.

Now he needed a drink, but something stronger than wine. Spencer had mentioned he’d put a bottle of cognac, Jess’s drink of choice, in the cabinet over the refrigerator. He appreciated his cousin for doing so because tonight he definitely needed it. He left the wine bottle on the coffee table with hopes he and Paige would eventually finish it. Grabbing their glasses, he then took them to the kitchen to rinse out and place in the dishwasher.

He found the bottle of cognac just where Spencer said it would be, and after grabbing a glass, he headed to the patio. Tonight, he needed to sit, drink, plan and strategize.

Dinner had been delicious and intimate. That private room had been perfect, and sitting across from Paige, seeing how her beautiful features had reflected in the moonlight and listening to her hold a conversation with both intelligence and insight had been enlightening. She might travel the globe a lot, but she kept up with the national news. All of their conversations during dinner had been interesting.

Jess glanced over at the villa where Paige was staying. A couple of her lights were still on; he’d flipped all his out. He much preferred the darkness, the peace and quiet. He’d taken a few sips of cognac before leaning back in the chair to close his eyes. It had been a long day, but a productive one. He hoped like hell that Kemp Pierson had egg all over his face tomorrow.

He opened his eyes when he heard a sound. Straining to see in the dark, he could make out Paige in the moonlight and in the lights lining the path. He sat up straight in his chair. Where in the hell was she going? It was past midnight. He studied her attire, saw the bathing robe and then figured she was going for a swim. At this hour? Why wasn’t she in bed?

Why aren’t you? he asked himself as he watched her stroll up the path.
