– Rodney Cavalier –

Rodney Cavalier is a writer and political activist. He served in the NSW parliament for ten years and was the Minister for Education in the Wran and Unsworth governments. He joined the Labor Party in 1968 at the age of nineteen. In his forty-six years of active ALP membership, alarmed at how conservative he has become, he finds (nonetheless) that he is further to the Left of the ALP than when he joined.

Rodney has served on the Council of the National Library of Australia and chaired the Advisory Council to the National Archives of Australia. He played a key role in commemorations marking the Centenary of Federation and 150 years of cabinet government in New South Wales in 2006. Grants given during these commemorations produced several score groundbreaking books.

He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Technology, Sydney in 2008 in recognition of his founding role. A monthly ALP newsletter he edits has passed 200 issues; it covers literature, labour history, social history, local history, movies, politics and current affairs and is not afraid of criticising the ALP or Labor governments.

Rodney has written many chapters and articles on politics, history and cricket. He is the author of Power Crisis: The self-destruction of a state Labor Party (2010), a book which has gained considerable influence for its explanation of the terminal state of NSW Labor. His second book Bronzed is a lavish, illustrated history of the sports sculptures installed at the Sydney Cricket Ground and Sydney Football Stadium. He served as a trustee of the Sydney Cricket Ground 1996–2014 and was trust chairman 2001–14. He is the chairman of the Charles Bean Foundation, a body devoted to commemorating the achievement of Australia’s war correspondents.
