Chapter 5

One week later, Assjacket Diner

Since Clio and Paul had discussed and agreed upon splitting their time between Minnesota and West Virginia, she and her new-found friends—Bree, Ammy, and Glory—and the local realtor Raisa Chekhov had spent the morning checking out properties for her to buy for her antiques business. They were now getting a bite of lunch before heading back out to look at a few more places that she and Paul might want to consider for their own home. The morning had been productive and filled with all sorts of wonderful possibilities that Clio found herself getting even more excited about beginning this next stage in her life with Paul.

Clio glanced around the diner and found at least a dozen sets of eyes—and she'd bet, ears—focused on her table. "Um, gals, we're the object of a lot of attention."

"Well, you are a heroine," Ammy said. "Annie and Joe have been singing your praises to everyone who weren't present to see you do your magic."

"Add to that you're sleeping with Paul," Glory, who was Ammy's sister, chimed in. "And they're all kind of wondering what your plans are."

"Speaking of Paul and sleeping. Why haven't you done it yet?" Bree asked.

Clio choked, then managed to swallow the bite of tuna salad sandwich she'd just taken and glared at the witch whom she'd learned also had some goddess lineage. "What are you asking?"

Okay, she was well aware of what Bree wanted to know, just was shocked the woman who was fast becoming the best friend she'd ever had would ask such an intimate question in front of Clio's other new friends, not to mention a diner full of people.

"You know what she's asking," said Glory.

Glory was married to Bree's business partner Liam Hardisty. Clio and Paul were staying with the Hardisty's who had more space than Bree and Dale. Besides, Paul had already been staying with them prior to Clio's arrival, because Bree and Dale were newly mated and needed privacy.

Privacy was something she and Paul could also use. Finding a place for them to live in Assjacket had just moved to the very top of her "to-do" list.

"Well, it's, um…rude…intrusive, and—" Clio twirled the straw in her diet soda and tried to think of another term.

"And none of our business?" suggested Raisa, a raven Shifter. "Get over that. You're in Assjacket now. Everything is everybody's business. Get used to it."

"So, spit it out, why hasn't Paul completed the mating?" Ammy prodded.

"How do you know we haven't?" Clio wondered if her sexual frustration was written all over her face.

"Because your scent is still mostly yours," Glory explained, a caring look in her eyes. "You have some of his scent on you, because you're sharing a bed at night. After you've fully mated, your scent will become saturated with his, telling all males to back off, that you're taken."

"Hecate's hangnails, everyone can tell we haven't mated yet?" Clio wanted to sink under the table even as she checked out the other diners who pretended not to be eavesdropping, but were.
