General Sixt von Armin’s IV Corps held the area where the British were about to attack. The point in the German line that 8/Devons (20 Brigade, 7th Division) was preparing to assault proved to be astride the boundary of two of von Armin’s divisions; the 183rd Division to the east of Mametz Wood and 3rd Guards Division to the west of the wood. To complicate the picture, one of the German formations arriving at the end of the second week of July 1916 was 7th German Division, who were in the process of relieving 183rd Division in the Mametz / Bazentin area.
