Chapter Fourteen

Wes

“Code red! Southeast border! Just north of the magnolia trees.”

Every wolf in the clearing paused as we all heard the same thing in our heads.

It was almost like I’d been expecting this news. For the past ten minutes, I’d been struggling to ignore the panic in my gut that I couldn’t place or explain.

“Austin, who are you with?” I called back.

“Marco and Brad.”

“How many strangers?”

“We smelled one male and one female come through. I don’t recognize either of them.”

“I recognize her,” Brad’s voice came through. “It’s that chick with the classic Ford. Matthias’s sister.”

Everything inside me froze for one whole second before I sprang into action. My claws dug deep into the soft ground as I propelled myself toward the tree line. “How close are you?” I yelled.

I could hear Matthias thundering behind me, but I ignored him. If he wasn’t faster than me, if he couldn’t get to her before I could, then he was no use.

“I can hear their footsteps, but they’re still like half a mile away.”

I growled as I pushed myself harder. “What direction are they running?”

“They were headed toward the lodge, but they veered east.”

“Can you talk to her?”

I didn’t know her mind well enough to reach her over such a far distance, and that fact churned my gut.

“I’ll try,” Austin responded.

“Her name’s Emily,” I added.

I felt the connection between us close as he hopefully reached out to her. There were more than just Matthias’s footsteps behind me, but I ignored them, too. All that mattered was getting to Emily.

“Okay, I talked to her.” Austin’s voice rang through my head, and I almost stumbled in my haste.

“What did she say? Is she okay?”

“She’s scared, but she’s okay.”

My stomach cramped painfully with that fear, and I couldn’t tell if it was mine or that strange sensation from before. “So, she doesn’t know whoever it is?” I asked, hoping I was wrong.

“No. She’s also getting tired, and she said whoever is chasing her is gaining ground.”

A growl ripped from my gut before I could stop it. Somehow, I ran even faster. “Steer her north,” I commanded. “We’ll meet them head-on.”

Austin disappeared again, and I held my breath as I waited to hear from him.

“She’s turning now, but she doesn’t think she can outrun him for much longer.”

My heart slammed into my gut, making me feel like I’d be sick. “Austin. I need you to get to her.”

“I’m tryin’, man. They had a good head start on us.”

That wasn’t the answer I was looking for. I knew he couldn’t do any better than that, though, so I held my tongue. Yelling wouldn’t make him run faster.

“Fuck!” Austin hollered before our connection went dark again.

“Austin!” When he didn’t respond, I screamed, “Brad! Marco! Someone fucking answer me.”

“He got her.”

I wasn’t sure who finally responded, but it didn’t matter. Those three little words had the power to chill me to the bone. I almost stopped running, but instinct kept my legs moving for me.

“What do you mean he got
