Go Wolf

When Max got to the field the next night, everyone was still human. Seeing them as people rather than wolves was kind of strange.

Max recognized Tim and Peter, but it took him a while to figure out who Lucas, Kate, and Becca were. Eight werewolves were gathered in the clearing, including Max and Tim.

"We need to talk about our plan," Peter said. "All three banshees showed up and fought us last night. I don't know why, but it can't be good."

"They might have wanted an easy win," Kate said, nodding her head toward Max and Tim. "They left when the rest of us got there."

"That might be, but they may be getting stronger, too. For the remainder of this month, I want us to go out together. All of us. Every night."

"What?"

"No!"

"Come on!"

"Yes," Peter said. "We will go back to shifts after the next full moon if they've backed off. I don't want to put any of us at risk."

"Even tonight?" Tim asked.

"Yes, we need to patrol tonight, too. So, let's go. Oldest to youngest."

Max thought, at first, oldest to youngest meant the old guy would change first. But Peter went wolf before any of the others. He walked to an open space, closed his eyes, growled, and suddenly he was a huge black wolf with red eyes.

When Kate changed after him Max realized they were changing in the order they'd been bitten. That meant he would go last.

He remembered that Peter said he'd been a werewolf for over a hundred years. Did that mean they would never age? Would he never grow up? He'd have to ask about that sometime.

Max watched as Lucas changed, followed by the old man, and then the girl he didn't know. Finally, when Max was surrounded by seven huge wolves, it was his turn.

He walked to the center of the field and gazed up at the moon. He tried to feel the heat in his face and the prickling in his skin. He closed his eyes and tried to think of something that would make him mad.

What worked last time? He'd been mad at Tim for growling at him. The time before that he was mad at Dean for hurting the rabbit. Was there some difference in being mad at a bully and being mad at a friend? Or was it because he was mad for someone else the first time? He thought about what Tim said the other night. He shouldn't only think about himself.

"Come on, dude! Go wolf already!" Lucas growled. He swished his tail and jumped at Max.

Max tried to duck out of the way, but Lucas hit him with his nose, knocking Max into the cold damp leaves.

"Back off!" Tim snarled at Lucas.

"No way! The little guy needs to learn!" He turned and barked a laugh at Max. "Are you a super-wolf or not? Come on and show us!"

He shoved Max with his nose again. A couple of the other wolves laughed.

"Come on. You can control it, can't you? Do it! Do it now!"

He pushed Max down again and again.
