Chapter Ten

Shimmering into human form, Holden said, “I know of a defensible location. Follow me.” He tossed me the blankets I had thrown at his truck. “Tie those around yourself. Don’t lose them. You’ll need them.”

Tying them around my neck like capes, I put on Elizabeth’s backpack to hold them in place and climbed up onto Sam’s back. Holding onto handfuls of his fur, I lowered myself down closely against him. They ran. Hunting Wolf stayed behind Sam to protect us from the Chenoo’s icy touch of death. Our surroundings were a blur as my companions ran faster than any car could go. Their speed made it even colder. My teeth clattered from the freezing wind, and my ears burned with it. Miles later, Holden led us to a hidden mine whose entrance was covered with massive boulders.

Shimmering into human form, he shoved at the boulders and said, “This was a group effort,” as he strained.

Colby shifted and helped him while Hunting Wolf moved a boulder in his Wendigo form. Sam lowered himself to his belly so I could climb down. Then, he rose up on his hind legs and came down on a boulder with his front paws, making the largest chunk of stone roll aside.

Holden raised an eyebrow. “Impressive. Follow me.” He led the way inside. In human form, there was enough room for each of us to squeeze through.

A long, dark tunnel stretched out into the darkness. It was impossible to tell how far back it went. Stretching my hands all of the way out to my sides, I tried to find a wall. My eyes could have been closed for all of the good they were doing me.

“Here, baby,” Colby said as he took my hand.

I clung to his arm like a terrified ninny. The strike of a match sounded in the darkness. Holden dropped it into a metal drum. An orange glow grew from its depths as though a crack had opened up into hell.

Shivering, I asked, “How are we going to get home? How did those things find us?”

Hunting Wolf focused his red eyes on me and said, “I begin to suspect the dark one hunts us with them. With a touch, I could destroy the Chenoo, but then his hold on me would be stronger.”

“Is he hunting me or you?”

“It matters not. We are one.”

Holden started lighting torches along the tunnel walls. Taking one of them, he said, “Come with me. This is one of our hideouts. We’ll be safe here.”

I asked, “Are you going to call your pack?”

Turning glowing eyes on me, he asked, “And get them killed? No. I’ll have to figure something else out.”

Sam said, “Working together would be of benefit to us all. However, to do so will require putting our prejudices aside.”

Holden said, “I don’t trust you, Stillwater.”

“I don’t trust you, either. Regardless, we have Rozene to protect.”

“You do. I don’t. She’s made her feelings for me clear.”

“Oh, since I didn’t want to have adulterous sex with you, you’re okay with me dying? Is that it? You’re fickler than Romeo.
