Part IV

Getting Fancy: Plasma Cutting, Oxyfuel Cutting, and Other Processes

In this part . . .

Most of the welding done today — both hobby welding and commercial welding — uses arc welding equipment. But arc welding isn’t the only game in town; the world of welding covers a wide range of processes, and many of them don’t fit neatly (or at all, for that matter) into the arc welding category.

For example, welding with a torch that runs on oxyacetylene gas is an option. You can also practice soldering or braze welding (also called brazing), two more techniques that fall in the “special processes” category. Finally, a whole variety of cutting processes aren’t welding — after all, you’re cutting metals apart instead of welding them together — but are still really useful to know if you’re going to be taking on any substantial welding projects. This part takes you inside those methods and processes.
