Icons of St. Anna usually depict her holding her infant daughter, resembling icons that show Mary holding the child Christ. But traditional images of St. Anna in the West show her teaching the young St. Mary, while holding an open book (the Scriptures, no doubt). That makes a good point: Mary’s wise and courageous character, which prepared her to say, “Let it be to me according to your word” (Lk. 1:38) as soon as she grasped what God was asking, was formed in childhood by somebody. Who else but her mother?††

In Orthodox worship there is a custom that, after a series of brief hymns, the last one will be about the Virgin Mary. This kind of hymn is called a Theotokion.
