Chapter 8

The end of the reno project was fast approaching, and Stetson hadn’t said more than two words to Sage all week. She was only a day or two—tops—from finishing the entire project and she’d be heading back to Nashville, the place she calls home. Away from Stetson and away from Shiner, Texas. And she couldn’t help but give in to all the memories of losing him as they rush over her. Only this time they seemed to sting a little more.

The door opened and her eyes met his gaze as he walked into the living room.

“Hey.”

“Hey.” She said as she removed some plastic from a newly acquired accent chair she was putting in the corner of the room near a bookshelf.

“Looks like everything is coming together nicely.”

“Yup! Only a few more tweaks and I should be out of your hair by tomorrow.”

“So soon?”

“Well, depending on how the last takes go for the show—yeah. You do still plan on being here for the final reveal shot—right?”

“Of course. But I figured you’d be here longer. I thought I—” his voice trailed.

“You figured what?”

“Nothing. Forget it.” He said as he headed for the kitchen. He opened the door to the fridge and pulled out a beer. It may have been barely past noontime, but it was 5 o’clock somewhere, and he needed a swig of liquid courage if he planned on telling Sage how he really felt about her.

“Stetson, I really thought we were connecting again, but I guess I did something to piss you off.”

“You didn’t do anything to piss me off, Sage. I do care a lot about you. It’s, well, you’re leaving again, and,” he let out a sigh and shook his head before continuing, “you don’t need a burden in your life.”

“Is that what you see yourself as? A burden? Stetson, you are not a burden. A stubborn jackass—maybe. But you aren’t a burden. Anyone that knows you can see that!”

“What do you know? You come in here on your flashing welcome home high horse to get ratings for your show. You say a few words to your adoring public and you’ll go to your cushy hotel room, get on a plane in the morning, and get as far away from Shiner as you can. You don’t understand what it’s like to come back to a place and have people look at you differently. And you haven’t got a clue what my rehab is like. Or how to juggle your work schedule with my doctor appointments. You don’t understand any of it. Jennifer sure didn’t, so I don’t expect you to either. I’m a burden, Sage, plain and simple.”

“Well, not that it’s my business—because your ex isn’t, but if Jennifer saw you as a burden, then she’s an ass. But really, what does that have to do with us?”

“I broke up with you a long time ago, and it’s a good thing I did too. You are getting along better without me in your life. You’re a fancy tv star willing to do whatever it takes for the camera.
