Chapter Seven

Aryan

Ruby slept wrapped in my wings, and when morning came, I found it hard to wake her up. She looked so peaceful and fulfilled, and I felt proud that I’d managed to make her feel so safe in my arms. When I’d met her at the Temple, she’d been worried about her family. The day before, when I’d left her alone to bathe and prepare for dinner, one of the things I’d done was to make sure that her family had received the credits that were due to them, and then that my emissaries paid the rich families in her city a visit that would change the way they treated their employees. I’d kept my promise, and I was going to keep an eye on things.

“My Ruby.” I nudged her gently. She opened her bright green eyes, and instantly, a smile appeared on her face. “Big day today.”

She shot up, alarmed. “Is it the day of the trials?”

“No. That is tomorrow. But today, we have a feast to attend, and you will meet the other participants.”

“Oh.” She let out a breath of relief. “If they’re anything like Nalla, I don’t think I’ll make any friends.”

She was the first human female to ever step foot on the dragon lands. And I could tell that the thought that she could become queen in just a few days made them feel a little uneasy. On the other hand, no one expected her to finish first in the trials. But now that we’d activated the pendant, I knew that I could help her. There was still a chance we could sit side by side on the throne and rule the dragon kingdom.

There was an open buffet and a bar, and everyone walked around with tall glasses and tiny plates filled with finger food. Later, there would be a grand lunch where everyone would sit at a long table, but for now, dragons in their human forms sat on the grass and on benches and chairs all around the courtyard, enjoying the sun and the bountiful vegetation.

Ruby and I moved through the crowd that parted before us. I wanted to introduce her to the other three brides that would participate in the trials the next day, so I avoided Daryan and his bride, Nalla. There was nothing to be gained from another interaction with them.

The brides were with their mates. They were all chattering away in a corner, and I approached them directly. The
